Price (MCT)
From 21 February 2024 the Minimum Collectable Tax on a pack of 20 is R25.05 (excise R21.78 + VAT @ 15% R3.27). A price below this is a strong indicator of an illicit product.
SA Diamond Stamp
An "SA" diamond stamp must be imprinted on every pack — usually on the bottom. Its absence contravenes the Customs & Excise Act.
Health Warning
A correct health warning (e.g. "DANGER: SMOKING CAUSES HEART DISEASE") must appear on the pack. Absent or incorrect warnings contravene the Tobacco Products Control Act.
Quitline Number
A valid quitline number must be printed on the pack. A missing or incorrect quitline number contravenes the Tobacco Products Control Act.
Tar / Nicotine Reading
Readings must not exceed 12 mg tar and 1.2 mg nicotine. Higher readings on the pack contravene the Tobacco Products Control Act.
Reduced Ignition Propensity
Packs must carry the "Reduced Ignition Propensity" marking. Its absence contravenes the Tobacco Products Control Act, Regulation R429.
